It\u2019s so widespread, in fact, that every country \u2013 no matter its size, population, or relative development \u2013 has a percentage of its population experiencing this issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To most people, \u201cmalnutrition\u201d conjures up images of barren fields, empty bowls and stick-thin figures. Although this is one side of malnutrition, this is far from the full picture. Every country experiences malnutrition \u2013 but not at the same rates.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/data.unicef.org\/topic\/nutrition\/malnutrition\/#:~:text=Sub%2DSaharan%20Africa%20remains%20the%20only%20region%20where,(56%20million)%20and%20sub%2DSaharan%20Africa%20(62%20million).\">Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia<\/a> face the highest rates of malnutrition, while Western Europe and North America have the lowest. Many of the most-malnourished countries have agrarian-based economies.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>How can malnutrition be common in countries where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/country\/malawi\/overview\">over 80% of the population<\/a> is employed growing crops? In countries like Malawi and Uganda, most farms are small-scale. They\u2019re operated by a single person or family, who rely on them for personal food as well as income. A single bad year means that not only is a family not eating well, but they\u2019re not making any money. Two or more bad years, and the situation has become dire. Malnutrition isn\u2019t just about the quantity of food \u2013 it&#8217;s about quality.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Eating a monotonous diet, even if it feels filling, can still lead to malnutrition. No single food contains every single nutrient a person \u2013 especially a growing child \u2013 needs for optimum health. Vitamin supplements can help make up some of the deficiencies, but families may not be able to access or afford them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The story of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.feedthechildren.org\/our-work\/stories\/cultivating-a-better-future-the-story-of-frasikos-family\/\">Frasiko and his family<\/a> is a telling example of how a diet that is too simple can lead to malnutrition, and how to effectively overcome that obstacle. Frasiko is a farmer in Malawi, whose crop of maize was both food and the sole source of income. Children who grow up in poverty are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/obesity\/childhood-obesity-facts\/childhood-obesity-facts.html\">more likely<\/a> to become obese. There are many reasons why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.feedthechildren.org\/our-work\/stories\/the-link-between-childhood-obesity-and-poverty\/\">poverty in the United States leads to obesity<\/a>. Processed food is cheap, readily available, and quick to prepare \u2013 an obvious advantage for parents juggling multiple jobs and childcare. Poorer areas have fewer safe spaces for children to play and exercise. All types of malnutrition can lead to lasting health consequences.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Malnutrition caused by undernutrition is more immediately severe. Acute malnutrition can result in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advancingnutrition.org\/spotlight\/wasting\">wasting<\/a>, which can be fatal.
